John Dean is an American attorney who served as White House Counsel for President Richard Nixon from July 1970 until April 1973. He was convicted of obstruction of justice for his role in the Watergate scandal and served four months in prison. He later wrote books about Watergate and Nixon’s presidency.
Dean was born in Akron, Ohio, to Mary Alice (Watson) and John Wesley Dean, Jr. His father worked as an insurance salesman. Dean’s family moved around frequently, living in Illinois, Colorado, and Florida. He attended high school in each state.
Dean graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1961. He then attended Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1965.
After graduating from law school, Dean worked as a law clerk for Judge Oliver Gasch of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He then worked as an associate at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Rogers, Hoge & Hills.
In 1966, Dean joined the U.S. Department of Justice as a special assistant to Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division John Doar. In 1967, he became an attorney-advisor in the Office of Legal Counsel.
In July 1970, Dean was appointed White House Counsel to President Richard Nixon. He held this position until April 1973.
